At the 30th Busan International Film Festival, Forum BIFF will host a special session in collaboration with the Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts) School of Film, TV & Multimedia, to commemorate the school’s 30th anniversary. This forum will highlight the school’s educational achievements over the past three decades and serve as a platform to discuss sustainable future directions for film education in Asia.
Founded in 1995, the Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts) School of Film, TV & Multimedia has played a pivotal role in the growth of Korean cinema. As a leading national institution, it has nurtured filmmakers from Korea and across Asia, spearheading the development of the region’s cultural content. Over the past three decades, the school has strengthened its global capacity in culture, the arts, and education, built robust infrastructure, and advanced co-production programs, establishing itself at the forefront of bringing K-content to the global stage.
This year’s forum will convene under the theme ‘Exploring the Present and Future of Film and Media Education in Asia.’ It will highlight the achievements of collaborative short-film production programs developed with leading film schools across East Asia and present new directions for the years ahead. Case studies will examine how Korea-Japan and Korea-China co-production initiatives have functioned as platforms of mutual influence within differing educational environments, creating new modes of learning and exchange. The forum will also underscore the importance of cultural exchange in cultivating the next generation of creative leaders, spotlighting AMA+ (Art Major Asian Plus), an international student scholarship program.

The forum will also highlight ‘the Campus Asia Plus program’, which fosters student exchange and collaborative animation production among universities in Korea, Japan, China, and member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Through this initiative, participants will examine the establishment of the Asian Animation Education Network (AAEN), a model that integrates advanced education, international exchange, and industry-academia collaboration. The session will further assess the rapidly evolving animation ecosystem amid technological innovation and pose critical questions about how to harness artificial intelligence (AI), offering new perspectives on the future of the content industry

Busan’s leading film education initiatives — including the CHANEL X BIFF Asian Film Academy, the ASEAN-Korea Film Leaders Incubator (FLY) of the Busan Film Commission, and the Busan Asian Film School (AFiS) — have nurtured emerging filmmakers while expanding networks across Asia. This forum will trace their development, evaluate achievements in Asian co-productions, and explore pathways for long-term sustainability.
The forum will take place on Saturday, September 20, from 14:00 to 17:00 KST, and will be structured into three parts.
Part I will open under the moderation of Professor Choi Yongbae (K-Arts School of Film) and feature a keynote presentation by Professor Kim Soyoung (Cinema Studies, K-Arts School of Film, TV & Multimedia). Parts II and III will be moderated by Professor Steve M. Choe (K-Arts School of Film, TV & Multimedia), who will lead the main discussion sessions.
Part II will feature the main presentations by Professor Lee Jungmin (Animation) and Professor Pyeon Jangwan (Filmmaking) of K-Arts, joined by Him Sotithya, a Cambodian director and AMA+ alumnus, and producer Ahn Jihye. Part III will conclude with a thematic discussion on the future of sustainable Asian film education. The session will include the earlier presenters alongside film critic Lee Seunghee; Tengan Daisuke, President of the Japan Institute of the Moving Image; Liu Yu, Professor at the Beijing Film Academy; Tian Li, Lecturer in East Asian Languages at Yale University; and Indonesian director Makbul Mubarak.
This forum will serve as a meaningful occasion to reflect on the past three decades of the K-Arts School of Film, TV & Multimedia and, building on its achievements, to prepare for the next thirty years. It is also expected to present future directions and visions for film education, both in Korea and across the international filmmaking community.
